The main difference is the GUI interface. Just as Linux has the Gnome and KDE GUI interfaces, Solaris has a GUI interface known as 'CDE' (Common Desktop Environment). Also like Linux, Solaris can simultaneously provide workstation and server functionalities.
This OS was typically used on SPARC based processors, up until 1994 when it began to support x86 and x86-64 based machines. Versions of Solaris up until version 8 are considered abandoned, with version 9's support ending in October 2014. The OS has been open-sourced and its successor is OpenSolaris.
If you are not using file system lot then you can limit on 16G system ZFS to 2G. And follow the Evil Tunning guide. This syntax is provided starting in the Solaris 10 8/07 release and Nevada (build 51) release. For example, if an application needs 5 GBytes of memory on a system with 36-GBytes of memory, you could set the arc maximum to 30 GBytes, (0x780000000 or 0 bytes).
Please reply back with the results from these checks and we will troubleshoot further. Thanks, Kris www.operatingquadrant.com I have a similar problem, on a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, where I followed the example on how to make a Collection Rule from the example here: I can see my Linux server without errors. I can run the prebuilt tasks, such as the 'Top 10 CPU Processes' task. I also see disk, network interfaces etc in the diagram view. I also tested the scripts on the Linux machine, and they work fine. After making the Performance View, there are no items in the list to choose from and graph.
Hi, SCOM 2012 R2 does not support monitoring Solaris 8 servers. Is there any way we can monitor solaris 8 servers using SCOM 2012 R2.Will agentless monitoring support this. Thanks in advance Bharath As defined in OpsMgr, 'agentless monitoring' specifically refers to agentless monitoring of Windows systems, so that particular OpsMgr.

About 50% of the space you freed up by decreasing the /export/home should be reallocated to this slice • The remainder of the space should be split up between / (file system root) and /var (about 25% each). That's because the mailboxes, logs, and other 'volatile' files are stored in various locations under the /var slice. (If your system may end up as a mail server you'll want to increase percentage allocated to the /var slice.) The extra space in the root slice will give you the ability to add new directories and files immediately off of it.
What else I need to check or modify. Any hint or clue will be appreciated. I am researching what CMT features are enabled in Solaris 9. Hello Sun-sters, I'm a new user of Solaris 9 x86 and trying to install on a Dll PowerEdge 1400SC server. Installation from the CD procedes through X Window loads to the following comsole reply:./W00.findswap[967]: 0*: more tokens expected # (I get a similar response from the Software Disk 1 of 2 setup, this time saying that it cannot find the disks and make sure they are connected before returning to the CLI prompt) From similar related questions I suspect this may be hardware related? Any suggestions out there from enlightened individuals? It would be much appreciated!

I have two CPUs on the Database server. The problem i am facing is that when i am monitoring the server with prstat command, the CPU utilisation has reached up to 100%.
The problem was a combination of devices getting renamed. After successfully attaching the 2TB disk to create a mirror, I of course could boot off the original 500GB disk. The problem was I didn't try to boot off the 2TB disk on the PCI card. Instead I swapped the cables, which led to the zpool freaking out about not being able to find the device (I only discovered this through the video! Automatic reboot on a kernel panic might not be such a great idea after all.).

Sun Solaris 8 Solaris is a Unix based operating system created by Sun Microsystems (now purchased by Oracle in 2010). It is the successor to and was released initially in June of 1992. The OS is based off of and its first release was known internally as SunOS 5.
In the UNIX world, a lot of programs are made available as the programmer's source code (text files). This code is usually written in C so if you're a C programmer you can look through the code in a text editor. Once you obtain the source code you then compile it into a binary executable program (the equivalent of a.EXE file on a PC) using a C compiler on your system. Most systems have GCC, a free C compiler. Solaris also includes the CC compiler located in /usr/ucb as part of the Solaris package.
• When you've got your values entered click on OK and then on Continue. • When prompted about 'remote mounts' answer 'No' by clicking on the Continue button. • In the 'Profile' window click on the Begin Installation button. Then click on the Auto reboot button and disregard the message about ejecting the Configuration Assistant floppy. • The file copying from the CD to the hard-drive will begin. You'll need to keep an eye on it because at the end of the installation of the 'Software' CD #1 you have to remove the CD once the system starts to reboot. You must do this in order to force the system to boot off of the hard-drive.
As defined in OpsMgr, 'agentless monitoring' specifically refers to agentless monitoring of Windows systems, so that particular OpsMgr functionality would not apply to Solaris 8. To monitor Solaris 8, you only real option would be via SNMP. But you will have to create the monitors yourself for the specific Solaris 8 attributes you want to monitor. If you search the web, you'll find articles/blogs on how to do this. Here's a simple example:.

Most companies and individuals who depend on Sun hardware and software for their living will want service and/or support at some point. A few are competent to go it alone. Some of us are merely hobbyists and do without. You can order a 'media kit' (DVDs) from Sun. Depending on the policy of the week, it may be free or there may be a nominal charge. I got mine free a few years ago.
Regards Hafeez. I've build a Solaris 8 server with solaris 8 and runnig netcool hi speed gateway and the server is practically unusable because of the high cpu. Here are 2 listings of the output form solaris prstat command from firstly, the new server and secondly from another server which is running similar application using oracle 8i instead of 9i.
I have two CPUs on the Database server. The problem i am facing is that when i am monitoring the server with prstat command, the CPU utilisation has reached up to 100%. Hi,all, I installed a oracle 10g database on a sparc solaris 9 OS, I set a cron job with oracle user, but this cron can not start automatic but it can start by manual.
As far as I can tell, I've set up all the partitions and slices correctly (VTOC below). The only error message I get is when I do: # zpool attach rpool c9t0d0s0 c13d1s0 (c9t0d0s0 is the 500 GB original disk, c13d1s0 is the 2 TB new disk) I get: invalid vdev specification use '-f' to override the following errors: /dev/dsk/c13d1s0 overlaps with /dev/dsk.c13d1s2 But that's a well known bug and I use '-f' to force it since the backup slice shouldn't matter.

Greetings, I have a Solaris 10 server on a T5140 LDOM with 16 cpus and 6GB ram hosting an Oracle database. Vmstat reports high values for 'de - anticipated short-term memory shortfall' but no indications of paging activity (pi, po, sr all report 0). Can this be an indication of a problem? I am not used to seeing these 'de' numbers on my other servers. Otherwise, the system seems untaxed. I am investigating because it is a link in a chain of servers that is experiencing performance problems. Echo::memstat mdb -k will show how much memory will ZFS using then you can limit that what ever you wanted.
(provided that's where you are). • At this point kdmconfig is run to detect hardware to set up the GUI.
Hi can someone give me command to find SPARC server serial number which has solaris 8 Rplay1: Hi! You can use 'sneep' command if you have installed SUNWsneep package. As root type sneep or /opt/SUNWsneep/bin/sneep Replay2: Hi, You should use the SUNWsneep package from the Sun Service Tools Bundle. This will normally retrieve the serial number from the chassis. However, on the grounds that you are running Solaris 8, the machine may be sufficiently old enough for there to not be a serial number embedded in the machine, which means you will have to go visit the machine and inspect the rear of the machine to find it manually.
• Install the Solaris 10 8/07 or Solaris 10 5/08 release on the target system. See the appropriate.
Or How can i download correct oracle 9i for Solaris x86? Can i recover backup of Oracle 9i and Sun SPARC Solaris 9 to Oracle 10g and Sun Solaris 10 x86? I want to recover database rman backup of Oracle9i R2 to New System. Old system and platform was Sun SRARC Solaris 9. New one is Sun Solaris 10 x86.
The SUNWs8brandk package is not required for this version. The product media contains the following versions: • Oracle Solaris 8 Containers 1.0.1, for systems running: • Oracle Solaris 10 10/08 or later • Kernels 137137-07 or later Systems running Solaris 8 Containers 1.0 (or Solaris 8 Migration Assistant) also must install the 1.0.1 product if the systems are updated to: • Oracle Solaris 10 10/08 or later • Kernels 137137-07 or later SUNWs8brandr and SUNWs8brandu are installed as part of an Oracle Solaris 10 installation.
And under Access & Security, users can upload their own personal SSH public key to the Nova service. This public key is automatically placed in the root user's authorized_keys file in the new instance, which allows a user to log in to the instance remotely. To create a new instance, a cloud user (the admin or any multitenant user) simply needs to click Instances under Manage Compute. Clicking Launch Instance on the right side produces a dialog box where the cloud user can specify the type of image (by default, non-global zone or kernel zone are the choices), the name of the new instance and, finally, the flavor of the instance.
This is because the Korn shell has more sophisticated shell scripting capabilities. However, the differences between the shells are relatively minor, and it wouldn't take you long to adapt to using a different shell. So what if you have no intentions of pursuing a UNIX certification or UNIX administration as a career? I'd stick with Linux. There are a lot more resources available on the Web, a lot more books for all levels of users, it runs on lower-cost hardware, and the Gnome GUI is more intuitive. There are also more people involved in the development of the OS, not to mention drivers and applications for it. Stuck In A Windows World?

The second database apparently didn't start. As you don't disclose your startup procedures, only generic advice is possible. If you don't use the Oracle provided dbstart (which you should) start up the database manually.

• A list of the 'slices' (partitions) will be displayed along with their sizes. Even if you chose the default layout you'll notice that there's an /export/home slice. According to the book ' Solaris Solutions for System Administrators' (shown near the end of this page), /export/home is the old way workstations used to store user files locally. This is why the majority of the free disk space is allocated here. This will cause problems if you want to play around with the server aspects of Solaris.
On it, or the Star Office and Oracle CDs that come with the media kit. For my money, buying the media kit is the much better way to go. But if you're in school, money is tight, or maybe you just want to play around with Solaris a little without investing a chunk of cash, at least downloading the two 'Software' CDs will get you up and running.

No license keys were or are involved. About three years ago Sun announced that the O/S and software development tools were free. I don't recall if that applied to all the older versions or just to the then current and subsequent versions. As a practical matter, you can run them without a license and no one is likely to come looking for you with legal papers to serve. Sun does charge for hardware, service and support. If you don't need support, you can buy some used hardware fairly cheaply on e-Bay or elsewhere, download Solaris and the development tools and have fun with them.
