Repeat process with other side of truck. Replace rotors if they are worn or you observe run out as brakes will chatter and not work well otherwise. Use high temp grease to butter the back of the pads.
The Cobra pads need a lot of tension on those clips when re-installing, to avoid rattling. Been there, done that, got the keychain and the t-shirt.many, many years ago. It really seems to be pulled by even minor ruts and it's more effort than I'm used to keeping it tracking on a curvy offramp. How do you diagnose issues in the steering column vs the steering box? When I went to check wheel bearings, holding 3 and 9 o'clock, I got nothing because the wheels both just turn towards one side or the other even with one wheel on the ground. There's not much resistance from the steering box. Something seems wrong with the steering so loose. No movement in the drag link/tie rod ends.
The front brake caliper is held in place to the caliper bracket by two bolts on the back side facing towards the engine. Loosen the upper caliper bolt by turning it clockwise (as seen from the outside of the vehicle) with the 17mm socket and ratcheting wrench.
The clip just holds it firm so it doesn't clap-clap-clap, as you go. Sounds more like the one caliper isn't working, thus the reason it pulls to one side, under braking. Check your soft lines for rot/cracks, tears, etc. Check the caliper piston seal. Check the caliper pins are still good. Check for any play in the wheel bearings. Remove the two bolts that hold the disc brake caliper onto the arm/spindle. Remove the caliper. The rotor should be free at this point to slide of the lug nuts.

If it is low, add some fluid. Brake pad rattle or rattling brakes can be caused by a number of things and the first thing is to carefully check that you have the correct parts for your car. Many brake pads look similar in design and it is easy to get supplied the wrong parts. Using the wrong parts that are undersize can be dangerous as the brake rattle if excessive could mean the pads moving in the caliper and becoming even jammed and not operating properly. Brake pad rattle can also lead to the pads skewing sideways and locking in the caliper causing the backing plates to be bent and the friction material to be broken away and cause immense problems.

Removing the brake fluid cap will allow the fluid to more easily travel backwards through the brake lines when you compress the two pistons. Slowly turn the 'C' clamp's handle while repeatedly checking the brake fluid level in the reservoir to prevent it from overflowing. Clean up any spilled brake fluid immediately since brake fluid can easily damage painted surfaces. You may have to reposition the 'C' clamp in order to fully compress both of the caliper pistons.
Hi, I had a 89 f-150 4x4 300 inline six. I jacked the front of the truck up till tires cleared grount, I then had a friend turn the steering back and forth makeing comlete turns till it stops each way, while I tightened the screw on the (rack) where your steering shaft meets at the radiator. I have been told there are several different ways to do this, but this worked for me. If you have a lot of play, two to three inches of play at the steering wheel you may have to replace the (rack).
Best way to describe this noise is it's as if you were tapping on the disc with a hammer. I've searched google, this forum, and Glacier's EXCELLENT tutorial on 1st gen brakes, but have not seen any pic that shows this clip and/or where/how it's installed on the inner pad, at least specific to the 1st gen Explorer's pad. I DID purchase from AutoZone a new caliper hardware kit that had the 4 metal/rubber retainer pins.
This might at least get you looking in the right direction.
Replace in reverse order. (2000.5 and up have Live axle set-ups, and this is where the clarity of the Haynes and Chilton's seems to get lost a bit, as they don't differentiate this from the older Auto/Manual hub setups. There is no engagment at the hub for 4x4, the axle shafts, diff, and front drive shaft are always connected to the front wheels and always spinning.). This is a job that requires lots of coaching so I suggest you get a manual on your car from AUTOBOOKDONLINE.COM and it will help on the next repair. Haynes manual also does a fair job of describing the process.

Then slightly loosen the 5 lug nuts on the front wheel by turning them counter clockwise with the lug nut wrench. Raise the front of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two. I prefer to work on one side of the car at a time for extra safety. Spin off the 5 lug nuts and set them aside in a safe place. Pull off the front wheel to reveal the brake caliper, bracket, rotor and suspension.

They are expensive and hard for your parts guy to find at the Ford dealership. You do NOT want to throw them away. As far as that goes, anything spring steel like these anti-rattle clips just lose primary tension over time (and over repeated heat/cool cycles), but do not permanently deform. Just keep your old black original clips, bend them out (or re-tension them, your preference) and re-install.
