I have an old WD 1TB external hard drive that I need to recover. It was working fine until the USB port inside the casing broke off the board and I took it to 2-3 shops where they told me that they can’t fix it and don’t have any means to recover it. I live in a place where there are no data recovery labs or any other services for this. I have tried everything. WD Caviar “Green” and it’s old, I bought it around 2011. Would you suggest your docking stations?

Be sure to line up the connectors inside the slot with the connectors on the drive and push the drive into the slot firmly until it seats on the connector. I recently bought a so that I could use some HDDs and SSDs I had laying around for back ups. At the same time I bought a brand new. The other drives that I had prior are a 128GB Samsung SSD, a 500GB Seagate Laptop HDD, and another 3TB Western Digital Green HDD. My issue is that neither of the Western Digital drives will show up when in the dock.

I then undocked it and redocked it and it showed up just as if I plugged in a USB drive. So I have to assume I am all good now. 3TB WD: When I plugged in the 3TB WD I opened the disk management utility to find that it has 3 partitions (I am not sure what they are of). I then deleted each partition and formatted the entire drive, giving it a drive letter also. Once this was done it showed up in windows explorer. I undocked and redocked it, it then showed up as if I plugged in a USB device. So I have to assume it is also all good.

Hi All, I have a couple of Buffalo External HDD's that I used to use for backups. They both use USB 2 and I decided I wanted USB 3 speeds to transfer data to and from the drives so I purchased an Inateck Dual Bay USB 3 Dock. One of the Buffalo drives is a WD Green drive which works fine in the dock, however the other drive is a Samsung HD103UI drive that simply refuses to appear in either Windows 7 nor Ubuntu whilst connected through the dock. The drive works fine when connected via its external enclosure and I can hear/feel it spinning when its in the dock. I've tried re-formatting the drive to NTFS and FAT32 with no success. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? I'm thinking that the drive either does not support USB 3 or the firmware is somehow not letting me use it in another enclosure/dock.
Jeff • Jeff Everett. Just got a new single SATA dock and am trying to format a new 2.5″ 750GB disc. Drivers installed OK when I connected the docking station and opened the Disk Management window in WIn 7. Selected that I wished to format the disc and then left it running – 12 hrs later and it was still running with no movement on the progress bar. Have now tried it in both quick and full format modes on 2 different laptops but with no success (sometimes get the message that WIndows was unable to complete the format). The blue power light is on the unit and I get an alternating blue / red LED while it is formatting.

When you connect the docking station to your PC via eSATA, you will only see one drive if you are connecting to an eSATA port that does not have 'port multiplier' capabilities.
I didn’t really know that I could use one until I looked it up today, but I’m not sure if it will read my drive due to WD’s data protection. Hi Tatinee, thanks for your comment! It sounds like your WD drive has two obstacles to overcome: 1) the data may be encrypted by WD 2) there is physical damage to the data port on the drive. Unfortunately, neither of these obstacles can be overcome by Plugable hard drive dock products. If the data must be recovered, I would recommend a national data recovery service like DriveSavers (www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com). Sorry that I don’t have a better solution for you, but I hope this helps!
I have written several posts that explain how to clone a hard drive or SSD, and every time I think I’ve found the simplest method possible I eventually discover an even easier way to do it. Well, I’ve found yet another way, and I honestly don’t think cloning a drive could be any simpler than this.
To do this click on the USB icon in the lower right of the screen and select “Eject MassStorage Device”. Using the USB 3.0 cable that came with your USB3-SATA-U3 Hard Drive Docking Station, connect your dock to a USB 3.0 port on your computer.

I bought this HDD docking station a few days ago and I am reasonably satisfied with it. The build quality is OK (not great, but not bad either) and the docking station is fairly easy to operate. Here are some extra information regarding the connectivity of the HDD docking station Startech has failed to provide: - When connected the HDD docking station through E-SATA with both drive bays populated, only the disk in bay 2 is visible/accessible.
• Make sure that the device supports the physical size of your hard drive, such as 2.5 inches or 3.5 inches. • Verify that the power consumption of your hard drive doesn’t exceed the power output of the device. If you’re using multiple hard drives, make sure that the combined power consumption of all of the hard drives doesn’t exceed the power output of the docking station. To confirm that Windows detects your USB device, complete the following: • Press the Windows key+ R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter. • In Device Manager, under the appropriate heading, confirm that your expansion card is listed and that there isn't an exclamation mark next to it. For example, a USB controller card would be under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Often a drive appears to be working fine until you try to copy large amounts of data. Sometime common signs of a failing drive are during a transfer a file cannot be read and the data transfer may fail, often with a cryptic error such like “Cannot copy my.file: Data error (cycle redundancy check)”, files could transfer but be corrupted, transfer speed is much slower than expected, and/or the drive drops offline during transfers requiring the dock to be reset.
(Windows XP, however, needs Service Pack 1 or higher for USB 2.0 support). Because the actual docking station itself doesn't need a driver, manufacturers don't supply one. Try the docking station and drive on a different PC if possible. If still no joy, the docking station may be faulty.
