“I think that the berimbolo is a very complicated technique. It’s way more complicated than people think because it’s not just about the move, but you have to make your opponent fall in order to apply the berimbolo. The de la riva techniques are definitely something people should know first. There are plenty of de la riva techniques you don’t have to learn until you do the berimbolo, but still, there are many you must learn first.” Caio also reminds us of a common misconception; many people think that the application of a technique is the most important element in its success, but rather, control, prior to any application, is the real key. “The most important thing is not how you apply a given technique, but how to not let the guy pass your guard and how to control the guy first. If you can’t control a guy in your guard, you cannot apply a sweep or submission.
BJJ today is evolving very quickly, and as much as you want to play your best game, your opponent wants to play their best game too, so you have to be well versed and ready for every type of style if you want to beat them.” Lastly, Caio turns to another popular position that cannot exist without a strong basic understanding of the half-guard, a position that Caio has proven to be an expert in, especially through his exceptional half-guard DVD instructional. “You always play reverse de la riva from half-guard.

These new positions are not modern jiu jitsu but in fact new techniques in and of themselves. Modern Jiu Jitsu, as my DVD illustrates, isn’t new jiu jitsu just a better way to do the things we have always been doing. We aren’t reinventing the wheel, we are using better application of technique to make the wheel better. I've been considering this DVD for a while now as I love to. The bad thing about a vacation: you miss class. The good thing about a vacation: you get to spend more time with instructional DVDs that you neglected when you were training regularly. (Also, you are on vacation. That’s also a good thing about a vacation. But never mind that for now.) I own a lot of instructionals, and one of my favorites is.
You need to know, and feel, what your opponent is trying to do. As you start controlling him, you start applying some techniques. The berimbolo is just one of the many techniques that can be started from the de la riva and I think it’s one of the more complicated ones – it’s never going to be basic. The berimbolo is something you should learn only once you have solid basics – when you understand the game a little bit more.” Although a technique like the berimbolo is quite advanced, there are many blue and purple belts that have been successfully applying the technique in competition. Regardless of the belt level, Caio says that this success is a result of strong basics, and references the twins from Sao Paul - the Miyao brothers - who have been terrorizing their respective divisions with their berimbolos. “Look at the Miyao brothers for example; their de la riva guard is very good.
It goes without saying that jiu-jitsu is constantly evolving. Athletes are always redeveloping their game to make sure it’s as fresh as possible, in order to keep their opponent at bay. World Champion Caio Terra is no stranger to a modern and unique jiu-jitsu game. Having begun his training with masters like Rodrigo Medeiros and Ricardo Vieira, Caio developed a strong base that further allowed him to construct a deep and complex system of techniques. However, although it seems like many of the techniques may be quite complicated, Caio reminds everyone that having a strong base is what is most important and allows those more complex techniques to become accessible. “The ‘new-school’ jiu-jitsu is still very much like the old-school jiu-jitsu but the techniques have just been modified.

And the Caio DVDs are a pleasure to revisit. Let’s get the two most obvious points out of the way: first, Caio’s technique is spectacular; and second, this DVD is beautifully filmed. Just check out this screenshot from Modern Jiu-Jitsu: The soft light of this DVD takes me on gossamer wings to BJJ Valhalla. Compared to this screenshot from Caio’s 111 Half-Guard Techniques DVD: Great DVD content that looks pretty good. 111 Half-Guard Techniques is a great DVD, too, and it doesn’t look bad. But compared to Modern Jiu-Jitsu, it’s no contest. I think the next step in BJJ instructionals involves improving production values.
I was able to get these Instructionals!! Got a great deal on it and I jumped on it very quick.
It's hard to argue with someone who received his black belt in three years and then went on to win the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Pan American Championship and World No-Gi Championship all at the black belt level!
Otherwise people will be so focused on learning advanced moves that they will not want to learn anything else. They must have a good base in every aspect of the game and not just be good in the one - you need to have a good game overall. That’s a great move, but it’s also an advanced move. You need to learn how to have a good half-guard before being able to play that game. The reverse de la riva is a position you can also play from spider-guard. When you are in half-guard and you can put the guy in spider guard; that is a good thing because you are putting him one step further from passing your guard. You don’t want to move to reverse de la riva from de la riva because then your opponent is just one step away from passing.” The importance here is that jiu-jitsu practitioners must constantly remind themselves that they need to develop their basics before giving in to any temptation of pulling-off berimbolos and fancy sweeps from the reverse de la riva.

It’s not like modern techniques are more advanced, they are just evolutions of the old-school. But still, it’s all about the basics, although even the basics themselves evolved - they’ve needed small adjustments over time in order for them to keep working.” The evolution of jiu-jitsu is something that is visible in every part of the jiu-jitsu game, not just in the handful of very obviously new techniques. “Every technique has changed.
You need to know, and feel, what your opponent is trying to do. As you start controlling him, you start applying some techniques. The berimbolo is just one of the many techniques that can be started from the de la riva and I think it’s one of the more complicated ones – it’s never going to be basic.
Caio teaches his unique approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, revealing details and secrets that make his style so effective. Caio believes that one must master the beginning levels without developing bad habits to be able to move on to the more advanced levels successfully.
A lot of people complain that footlocks are forbidden before the brown belt, but it’s obvious that if footlocks were available, people would be jumping for ankle locks rather than passing the guard. You need to know how to pass and submit properly to then apply footlocks. Otherwise jiu-jitsu would only be about footlocks. That’s why I believe that people should not focus on advanced moves until later.

I've been considering this DVD for a while now as I love to play half guard and find that since I'm a bigger stronger guy that when I learn what works for smaller guys and apply that to my game I get great results. Just wanted to see if anyone has this movie or has seen it and what they thought. Thanks There's an advert for it on YouTube. A technique such as the infamous “” is considered an advanced technique, and is not recommended for anyone to focus on until their basics are solidified. “I think that the berimbolo is a very complicated technique. Modern Jiu-Jitsu is aimed at beginning- to intermediate-level BJJ players, which makes it perfect for me, but I’ve heard higher-level guys say they learned a lot of details from this material, too. That’s not surprising, because Caio does some very fundamental techniques in a slightly different way from the standard method. Sometimes, this will leave you wondering “I wonder if that will work for me.” Many times, it will leave you saying “Wow, I can’t wait to try that out in rolling.” You can see an example of the techniques on the DVD. If you pay any attention to competition jiu-jitsu, you know you can’t argue with Caio’s results. For a guy like me — a smaller person who tries to be detail-oriented — his DVDs are top-notch. Plus,, so you can get it for cheaper than I did!
